LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. — Two local teams were in the national spotlight on Saturday. Lee’s Summit West and Staley High School’s football teams enjoyed a little rivalry on ESPN.
There were so many cars and people in the parking lot and inside the stadium that it seemed like a professional game. Lee’s Summit West Titans fans were all fired up!
“We’ve never faced Staley in the regular season so to have it as the home opener on ESPN is a huge deal,” said Titan mom Amy Ganaden.
Both teams were desperate to win Saturday’s game. In 2011, Staley beat Lee’s Summit West in the semi-finals 76 to 70 with four over times. Staley went on to win the state championship. Titan’s wide receiver Monte Harrison wants to reclaim the victory from the Falcons for his brother who played during that losing final game.
“He’s kind of taking his brother’s spot, his brother was the wide receiver for Lee’s Summit West. He graduated last year so now Monte is stepping up and wearing his same number,” said Titan’s mom Michelle Francis.
Gail Schuetz said her son Ryan, a right guard for the Falcons has had his game face on all week and they were expecting to win after being the state champs in 2011.
“We didn’t lose a game last year so some of these guys on the team have never experienced losing a game but they are tough and they know there is always a winner and a loser and I think they’ll handle it just fine,” Schuetz said.
In the end, the went to the Titans who dominated the entire game from start to finish.
