KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Six months ago the YouTube channel Show Me Cute didn’t exist.
And Jenny, its creator, only shared her crafty secrets and recipes with close friends and family. But with the success of her friend’s channel Cute Girls’ Hairstyles, Jenny was inspired to launch her own.
“In the beginning, I started with all the things that friends had asked me about,” she said. “Weird things like how I soften butter in the microwave to how I cut a pineapple — just little things that I make from jewelry to making Valentine’s T-shirts and those kinds of things.”
Jenny came up with over 100 topics and got to work making video after video after video with the help of her husband and No. 1 fan, Bruce.
“In the beginning, it started out really small and we’ve grown so quickly,” Jenny said. “We have just over 10,000 subscribers and we have almost a half a million views already, which is wonderful.”
Show Me Cute even got the attention of YouTube, which invited her to be one of nine women to create videos for their “For Mom” channel.
Jenny said yes.
Getting started was easy. Jenny had plenty of ideas. What she didn’t have was experience in front of the camera or with editing videos. But she threw caution and inexperience to the wind.
“We just went out and bought the cheapest HD camera you can buy and started from there,” she said. “And we’ve learned a lot along the way. Lighting is key — and trying to stay happy and cheery and think of things to say and not get tongue twisted.”
It was trial by fire, but Jenny gets better with each project. And her husband, who taught himself how to edit videos, continues to provide support and a steady hand behind the camera.
For Jenny, Show Me Cute is a creative outlet, but for her subscribers, it’s an online classroom that teaches them how to create cute things that express their personality.
“I love it,” she said. “It brings so much happiness, so much joy to me.”
