MERRIAM, Kan. – Three metro animal shelters teamed up in hopes of getting 700 homeless pets adopted this weekend. The second annual Mega Match-A-Thon is the area’s biggest animal adoption event of the year.
On Saturday hundreds got up early and braved the cold weather while they stood in line at the Great Plains SPCA on Antioch Drive in Merriam in order to find the perfect addition to their homes and families.
During this event all dogs and cats from the Great Plains SPCA, Kansas City Pet Project and Wayside Waifs shelters were just 25 dollars.
“We provide with them vaccinations, spay neuter surgeries, medical support, this weekend they’re getting collars and id tags so it’s a full package you’re not going to get a better deal than love of a lifetime and all that for 25 dollars,” said Rachel Hodgson of Great Plains SPCA.
By Saturday afternoon the three shelters were already more than half way to meeting their goal of 700 adoptions.
“Yesterday we had 149 pets adopted through our Merriam and Independence campuses. That’s unheard of. A good day could be 10 to 12 depending, so we had ten times a good day,” Hodgson said.
Lauren Jones from Overland Park was second in line with his grandson, and spent at least an hour in the cold, but said it was worth it to find their new best friend.
“He’s amazing and I love him,” said Jones about their new pet.
The event goes until seven o’clock Saturday, and from noon until six o’clock on Sunday.
