KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The investigation into the murder of two people and the injuring of an infant in a Kansas City, Kansas, apartment has now turned into an investigation into how the KCK Police Department has handled the case.
Members of the Metro Squad, which was called in to help KCK Police investigate the March 4th shooting deaths of Renesha Jones and her sister’s boyfriend, Keith Barrett, have filed a complaint over the conduct of a KCK Police commander.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation told FOX 4 on Thursday afternoon that they have not been contacted to get involved in the case.
The investigation into the shooting has focused on three men who have been arrested by police in connection to the case, but have still not been charged. The Metro Squad assisted KCK officers with the investigation for three days, but they also conducted their own investigation and evaluation into the entire investigative process, including suspect interrogations.
The Metro Squad filed their complaints after turning the case back over to KCK Police. In a statement to FOX 4, Metro Squad Chief Greg Mills said, “These issues can be case-related or policy-related, either of which would be inappropriate for me to otherwise discuss. The rumor that the Metro Squad will no longer respond to a request from KCK is false.”
The specifics of the complaint have not been released, but FOX 4 has learned that the complaints have led to an internal investigation at the KCK Police Department.
