KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As many as three million debit and credit cards may have been exposed. In yet another security breach, a large company is causing customers to worry thieves have their personal information.
This time it’s a nationwide arts and crafts store Michaels that’s dealing with a security problem.
“Credit card, debit card, that’s just what we use all the time, so it makes me a little nervous to know that there’s that chance that someone has my information now,” said a Michaels store regular, Danielle Reyes.
Michaels announced that it had security breaches between May of 2013 and January 2014, possibly exposing up to three million customer debit and credit cards.
“I will definitely be watching my credit card and bank statements very carefully to make sure there are no unnecessary purchases from anyone else,” added Reyes.
“I’m very concerned,” said Andrea Jones, another Michaels store customer, “because I don’t want anyone to have information that they shouldn’t have in their hands!”
Michaels says in a statement on its website that it retained two independent, expert security firms to conduct an extensive investigation. They’ve also been working closely with law enforcement authorities and coordinating with banks and payment processors to determine the facts. and provided data about potentially affected payment cards to the relevant card brands so they could take appropriate action.
“It makes me a little leery about using the card knowing that, they said it might be a minor breach, it’s still a breach,” Reyes said.
According to Michaels, the breached systems contained some card information, like the card number and expiration date.
“Hopefully we can get the security fixed so people’s information isn’t out there. But it does make me, and I’m sure lots of other people nervous,” said Reyes.
