OLATHE, Kan. – Students taking French at Chisholm Trail Middle School are raising funds to help bring awareness to lack of water in some areas of the world.
H2Eau Challenge at Chish2olm is an off-shoot of a project begun last year with French Teacher Diane Bosilevac, who also teaches at Olathe South High School.
“Last year, I had the idea to teach my French students about various water issues that have been going on in French-speaking countries and around the world,” Bosilevac said. “I witnessed this first hand when I went to Morocco on a Fulbright Scholarship four years ago. Women throughout Morocco have to walk long distances just to get water and oftentimes, it’s not clean. It took me a few years to realize this is a global problem and one that I needed to bring to the attention to my students.”
This year, students put together an assembly for students and have decided to build a well in Haiti with water.org, an organization that helps build wells and pumps in various countries. To help raise funds, every Tuesday in November has been designated “Two buck Tuesdays” and students are asked to bring in $2. A water fountain is also being turned off as an “inconvenience” to students on that day.
