MISSION, Kan. — Developers decided to abandon the plans for the Mission Gateway aquarium and hotel, citing lack of financial backing as the cause.
The project was scheduled to occupy the former Mission Center, which was demolished at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Roe seven years ago. The construction has been delayed multiple times since the original planned beginning in 2005.
The hotel and aquarium required $63 million in sales tax revenue bonds. The developers did not feel the turn-out on these bonds would be a practical choice.
Developers assure that the space in Mission will not remain vacant, however.
According to the developer’s website, the updated plans of the project include a Wal-Mart, 150,000 square-feet of retail and office space, 300 apartments, a movie complex, and a 45,000 square-foot fitness center.
Construction is scheduled to begin this fall.
