MISSION, Kan. — After Rolling Stone revealed its August edition will feature Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, many spoke out against the decision, saying it glamorizes the alleged killer.
In Kansas City, HyVee stores were allowed to opt out of selling the magazine. The manager at the HyVee store in Mission, Kan., said they have decided not to sell the August edition of the magazine.
Other major retailers have also pulled the magazine off their shelves. Rolling Stone magazine said the cover and the story of Tsarnaev is not meant to offend, but to shed light on the effects of mental illness and skewed Islamic beliefs.
Following the release of the cover photo, a Boston police sergeant released photos of a bloody Tsarnaev taken moments before his capture. He has since been relieved of his duties pending review as he was not authorized to release the photos.
