COLUMBIA, Mo. — The NCAA was expected to announce on Tuesday the results of its investigation into Miami’s athletic program on Tuesday, which was to include the five-game suspension of Miami’s former basketball coach and current Mizzou basketball coach Frank Haith.
The suspension of Haith comes 2½ years after the investigation of Miami began. The NCAA has already reprimanded the Hurricanes for not “exercising institutional control” over Shapiro’s interactions with the school’s football and men’s basketball teams. Shapiro, a former booster and convicted felon, confessed to the violations and improper benefits, saying he revealed the infractions because he was angry at the team and the players.
“Once the players became pros, they turned their back on me. It made me feel like a used friend,” Shapiro told the Miami Herald.
The investigation, according to ESPN, will penalize the Hurricanes football program of nine scholarships and potentially other sanctions, but it will not deny the Hurricanes bowl game play if eligible.
