HOUSTON — Instinct kicked in when a dog attacked a young mother’s daughter.

Chelsi Camp said she was taking car of a friend’s pit bull that always seemed to be friendly. Until he met Camp’s two-year-old daughter, Kenzi.

“The dog came up and he was just curious,” Camp said in an interview with KHOU-TV. “When he smelled her, that’s when you saw it flip because I think he smelled my dog on her.”

The dog attacked. And that’s when Camp jumped in to protect — and save — her daughter. She shoved her fist into the dog’s mouth and bit off its ear. During the struggle she managed to call 911. She even had the presence of mind to tell her daughter to turn over so she wouldn’t choke on blood.

When an officer arrived, he shot the dog, but didn’t kill it. It was later euthanized.

Camp said her daughter is on the road to recovery.

“She’s a strong little girl and a fighter,” she said. “She’s meant to be here.”
