CHARLOTTE, N.C. — People are showing a special interest in archery thanks to Hollywood. With movies like the Hunger Games, Lord of the Rings or Gladiator, archery enthusiasts are buying bows and arrows so they can get in on the fun. Archery is a sport where you use a bow to propel arrows.
Sandi Scrone and her husband Tim say more people have contacted them about lessons because of the summer Olympics. They’ve had so many inquires that they decided to start a camp for kids. As of now, there is a waiting list for their camp.
“In 2010, I only did seven private lessons,” said Sandi Scrone. “In 2011, I only did 20 private lessons. So far this year, I’ve done 35 and it’s only July.
3D shooting and compound bows are popular in North Carolina. The Hunger Games made the traditional or bare bow more popular. Experts say there are even some benefits to the sport.
“We’ve had kids in the past who’ve come to us whose doctors actually recommended archery as a physical activity to help them focus and take their mind off of their chemo,” Scrone said.
