INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – A normal Friday night turned into a nightmare one metro woman will never forget. Now, six months later, she’s still hoping for the information that will help her get justice for whoever killed her son, Corey Laykovich.

“That night I was planning to go out of town. My husband had surprised me and said we are going to go to Omaha for a couple of days,” Michelle Metje, Laykovich’s mother, said.

Instead of a trip out of town last July, Metje received an unwanted surprise that changed her life forever. Laykovich showed up at their home in Independence with a knife wound to the neck.

“He fell into my arms and quit breathing and I told him he needed to start breathing. Actually, it was, ‘You can’t do this to me. Breathe.’” Metje said.

He died at the hospital from his injuries. Six months after his death, investigators are no closer to finding his killer. That’s why Metje is adding $2,000 to the reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

“We, as a community, we need this person off our streets because if they can kill my son, they’ve shown the ability to do that and they can do it to anyone’s son,” she said.

Metje believes that someone knows who killed her son, and that it’s only a matter of time until police get the information they need to solve the case.

“You may not have thought Corey was worth the $10 you killed him for, but someone else is going to believe that your life is worth $7,000 to them,” Metje said.

As she said, the reward total is now at $7,000. If you have information that will lead authorities to arrest Laykovich’s killer, you are urged to contact Crimestoppers at (816) 474-TIPS. If you wish to contribute more to the reward fund, click on this link to donate.
