INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — An Independence mother is still seeking justice exactly two years since her son was murdered.
Police have yet to arrest anyone for stabbing 22-year-old Corey Laykovich as he walked home early the morning of July 27, 2013, from a nearby convenience store.
“It keeps me up at night,” his mother, Michelle Metje, told FOX 4 Monday evening. “It keeps me up during the day. I dream about it.”
Metje remembers the shock, horror and sadness she felt when her younger son woke her up and brought her into Corey’s bedroom, where he was bleeding to death from stab wounds.
“I said, ‘Come here,’” she recalled, “and he fell down onto his bed and into my arms, and quit breathing.”
Corey later died of his injuries.
“It weighs heavy on our minds, it weighs heavy on in the air here,” Metje said of the void losing Corey has left behind in her home.
Independence police have not arrested anyone for Corey’s murder, and his mother said her family has few clues as to what exactly happened or why.
“It is extremely frustrating for me,” she said of two years passing by without answers. “I truly believe that there is someone who saw this happen.”
But Metje refuses to give up hope – making t-shirts, organizing prayer vigils, and sharing her son’s story as she waits for someone to come forward.
“Stand up and say something now,” she pleaded. “It’s been two years. Set my family free.”
Crime Stoppers just put up six new digital billboards around the metro asking for tips in this unsolved murder case. The organization is offering $8,500 for any information that leads to an arrest.
