ALBANY, Mo. — Hours after the Nodaway County prosecutor announced he has requested an independent review of the Daisy Coleman rape case, her mother spoke with FOX 4’s Eric Burke.
“We are glad, we’re excited,” Melinda Coleman said.
Coleman’s daughter, Daisy, was allegedly raped by a high school senior in 2012 when she was 14.
“I’m asking the court to appoint a special prosecuting attorney to conduct an independent review of the facts and determine whether to refile the charges,” Nodaway County Prosecuting Attorney Bob Rice said in a news conference on Wednesday.
Rice said the case was closed when the victim of the family decided not to help with the prosecution. He said until he saw Coleman giving an interview on CNN about the case, he had no idea they were willing to assist in the case.
“Last night the witness went on CNN and announced they were willing to testify, participate in the prosecution of the case,” Rice said. “Until that time they had never told me they change their minds.”
Coleman said from the front porch of her Albany, Mo., home her daughter and her friend were sexually assaulted by two boys in early 2012 and she wants to get justice for the girls.
“Just to have people listen and someone look at it with an objective eyes is huge for us,” she said. “Because we haven’t had that.”
A Nodaway County judge will appoint a special prosecutor who will conduct their own investigations and decide what — if any — charges will be filed. There’s no timeline on exactly how long that will take.
