KANSAS CITY, Mo. — People in a Northland neighborhood say they’ve seen the suspect; a gunman police say tried to kill their neighbors.
It’s been a devastating week for the neighborhood near 103rd and North Virginia Avenue. First a mother and daughter are shot, then a nearby home is raided and several teens handcuffed in connection to that shooting.
The gunman is still on the loose. Neighbors are on edge, especially after realizing they’ve seen the suspect before.
A horrible mistake is what Lauren Shea is calling the shooting that happened next door. On Tuesday morning, close friends to her family, Michelle Class and her 14-year-old daughter Reagan were shot.
“He definitely made a mistake. There’s no way he was going after this family there’s absolutely no way,” Shea said.
Police say he targeted the family but neighbors argue the gunman got the wrong house. Theories have started running through the neighborhood as the sketch of the suspect was released by police.
“Have you seen the man that’s in this sketch?” FOX 4’s Megan Brilley asked.
“Yes,” Shea said.
Shea says her family has seen the suspect at a house up the street several times; the same home that was raided Friday night, in connection to the shooting of Michelle and Reagan Class. Several teens were cuffed and questioned by detectives. Everyone was unnerved to hear their own neighbors could be involved.
“It was shocking but at the same time knowing that they made that advance in the investigation it was calming,” said Shea.
Neighbors say Michelle is awake and talking, while family says 14-year-old Reagan is in very bad shape. Neighbors are angry that people they call “uncommonly good” are facing such an awful tragedy.
“I hope this doesn’t permanently affect them. They need to come back and they need to know that everybody is ready for them to come back,” Shea said.
Police say no official arrests or charges have been filed. FOX 4 reporter Megan Brilley went back to the house that was raided Friday night and spoke with the teen’s mother. She told FOX 4 she is positive her sons had nothing to do with the shooting. The mother says she is praying the gunman is found and arrested, so the victim’s family can find peace.
