KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Some strange new bike racks are going up all over downtown Kansas City. It’s basically a bicycle rental program called BikeShareKC, and it officially kicks off in Kansas City on July 3.
“I like to say Bike Share is kind of like Red Box, instead of DVDs we have bicycles,” said Eric Bunch, with BikeShareKC. “You can come grab a bike here and then ride it to any of the 12 locations.”
The bike stations are being installed all over town, and it’s intended for short trips around downtown. For example, someone who works in the River Market could check out a bike to grab lunch in the Crossroads or Crown Center.
“We’re thinking people will like the idea of not having to get their car out of the garage or not have to get in the car at all,” said Bunch. “Just hop on a bike and do the short trips around town.”
BikeShareKC is a membership program. You can buy either a day pass for $7 or a weekly, monthly, or yearly membership. The yearly pass is $65. Riders can use the bikes for free for half and hour. After that, each half hour is $2.
