KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As students head back to school, the Kansas City School District has implemented some new security measures — as have other schools throughout the Greater Kansas City area.
“We have additional cameras and surveillance,” said Dr. Stephen Green, Kansas City School District superintendent. “We have a pretty broad based initiative we launched in response to that to review all of our policies and procedures, and as we start the school year, each school will get a grade as to where they stand and they’ll be examined by this external group.”
Green said as technology changes and improves, it’s important to refine the tools already in place.
Blue Springs spent $14 million in bond money to upgrade school security. Lee’s Summit upgraded their camera and buzzer system and Kansas City schools added some cameras and have created a task force of parents, teachers and security to examine safety at each school.
Olathe schools start on Wednesday and voters there passed a bond to upgrade security at all their schools, adding cameras and creating more pinch points, where visitors are forced to go through an office before getting into the school.
