KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says Kansas City Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe is expected to be suspended for the season opener against Tennessee after his arrest for marijuana possession. The Chiefs released a statement confirming the suspension, expressing disappointment but also saying that it ultimately supports the NFL’s decision.
Bowe was pulled over in a Kansas City suburb on Nov. 10 for driving 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. He was arrested after police found a black bag containing his wallet, driver’s license and two containers of suspected marijuana.
He later pleaded guilty to amended charges of defective equipment and littering, and paid $610 in fines. Bowe’s attorney said there was no admission of guilt for the marijuana charge, which was dismissed.
Bowe released a statement on Friday morning:
“I am extremely sorry that I can’t be on the field for the first game of the 2014 season because I made an error in judgment. I take responsibility for my mistake, and it will not happen again. I hope that my teammates, coaches, and Chiefs fans accept my sincere apology. I will be supporting my teammates in week one, and I cannot wait to get back on the field to help us win in week two and beyond as we work towards our goal of winning the Super Bowl.”
