NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The city of North Kansas City on Tuesday voted to look into a possible sale or merger of North Kansas City Hospital.

The measure approved by the North Kansas City Council authorizes Merrill Lynch to look into possible sale opportunities for the hospital. The firm would collect a $1 million fee plus a percentage of any sale or transaction price.

The move came as a surprise to hospital officials, who say that the facility is in good financial condition. Hospital president and CEO David Carpenter said that he was unaware that the city was looking to sell the hospital until this week.

The city has not disclosed why they are looking at the possibility of selling the hospital. City officials say that they interviewed four firms before settling on Merrill Lynch.

The hospital opened in 1958. Today, it’s a 451-bed facility on a 69-acre campus.
