HAYS, Kan. — A Kansas mom says her 6-year-old son was suspended from an elementary school for his “mohawk” haircut.
Ashley Fay tells KWCH-TV that her son, Xavier, was suspended for three days from Roosevelt Elementary because the haircut violated the school’s dress code.
“That’s what we are supposed to be teaching our children,” said Fay. “To not be the same as everyone else. She later said, “we didn’t understand why just him. There are other kids with crazier hair cuts than what he has in the school.”
School officials couldn’t comment on this specific instance, but did dispute that Xavier was suspended over a dress code violation. Principal Lee Keffer says so far, no students have been suspended because of dress code issues. He added, “the real purpose of a dress code is so that you have a smooth running building and you don’t have distractions from what is going on in the classroom.”
Xaiver’s mom doesn’t think that is fair. “Mostly it’s their personal opinion. It could be okay for one student but not for another, so it’s really not fair.”
Whether or not he was suspended for the haircut or for other reasons, Xavier did return to school Monday without cutting his hair.
