OLATHE, Kan. — An assistant principal at Olathe South High School was a Twitter topic at the school Monday. News of her arrest last weekend and her mug shot were making the rounds.
Denise Herman was pulled over at 1:34 a.m. last Sunday just about a block away from the Olathe Police Department. She was later booked into Johnson County Jail on suspicion of DUI.
Herman is not only an assistant principal, she’s also the spirit activities director and oversees the cheer, drill and dance teams. Each of the members of those teams has to sign the Olathe School District’s substance abuse policy, stating they won’t use or be in possession of illegal substances. If they are caught, they face consequences.
A few students FOX 4 talked with after school were disappointed Herman was arrested. Even though she’s of legal age to drink, they feel she used poor judgment.
“I think it’s important to learn from it, but from the school district standpoint, I don’t know if it’s forgivable in that sense because she’s setting an example for all the students, and it’s not a good one at this point,” said Justin Hermstedd, an Olathe South senior.
District officials didn’t comment Monday afternoon, saying the issue is a personnel matter. Herman is due back in court January 7.
