OLATHE, Kan. — A Johnson County woman turned herself in to authorities on Thursday after prosecutors charged her with attempted to murder.
Renae Michelle Rowley, 48, is accused of shooting at a man with a handgun while he was laying in bed at a house in the 10600 block of S. Highland Lane in the upscale neighborhood of Cedar Creek in Olathe on October 13.
The victim was not injured in the shooting.
The suspect’s daughter says the shooting was an accident, that her mother tripped over a laundry basket and the gun accidentally discharged.
The daughter, who didn’t want to be shown on camera, told FOX 4’s Rob Low that her parents allowed the alleged victim, Terry Schreier Jr., 31, to live in their basement with her 20-year-old sister because the two have a baby together.
The daughter says her parents were trying to kick him out of their house because they suspected he was stealing from them.
On Oct. 13, when the shooting happened, the daughter says Rowley and Schrier were arguing and her mother tripped while holding a gun, causing it to discharge. The bullet penetrated a wall.
Although the bullet missed, prosecutors say it doesn’t change the intention of the crime.
“We feel comfortable that the evidence that the police obtained during this investigation justified the charges and this will play out throughout the court process,” said Steve Howe, District Attorney in Johnson County.
Rowley was arraigned in a Johnson County courtroom on Wednesday afternoon, and her bond was lowered from $50,000 to $25,000.
