KANSAS CITY, Mo. — One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting near a south Kansas City YMCA on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, officers were called to the parking lot of the YMCA at 11300 Holmes around 4:15 p.m. on reports of a shooting.
Police say that the two male shooting victims were apparently taken from the scene in a private vehicle.- one man died of his injuries at an area hospital, while the second was listed in stable condition.
Officials with the YMCA say that the shooting happened in the parking lot of the Red Bridge Family YMCA, although the victims were not related to the YMCA in any manner.
Witnesses say two cars pulled into the parking lot; they then saw the people in the car- all male- jumped out of each vehicle and begin shooting at each other.
David Byrd, CEO of YMCA of Greater Kansas City said in a statement:
“As you can imagine the Y associates and members are shocked by this random act of violence that threatens their safe neighborhood. At the Y our cause is strengthening the foundation of the community. That is why we will step up our partnerships with the local law enforcement and local partners to protect our great community.”
Authorities have not released the identity of the victims, and there is no suspect description.
