KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A few dozen people laid on the ground and pretended to be dead at a busy shopping center Saturday.
The group said the ‘die-in’ was part of Saturday’s National Day of Resistance. Members said the rally, which took place at Legends Shopping Center, was in large part in response to the situation in Ferguson, Missouri.
“What better way to do it then where there are you know, crowds of people, communities there where they can see the frustration, where they can see the passion that we have about the situation,” said Ronel Richardson, who took part in the ‘die-in.’
Before the group fell to the ground and pretended to be dead, they took a march around the fountain at the outdoor mall and chanted that they wanted justice.
“When you see things like the ‘die-in’, when you see 75 or 100 people laid out in a position like they’ve been murdered sometimes that brings a greater feeling to what’s going on in our nation,” said Jesse Blakey, who also took part in the event.
Several police officers and mall security were on site, but none of them had to intervene because the protest remained peaceful. The ‘die-in’ lasted about 20 minutes.
