KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police identified the 21-year-old man shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of Price Chopper at 5800 Wilson Ave., as Donald Donato.
Alert security guards apprehended Marcus Kennedy, 44, in connection with the shooting and police arrested him at the scene.
“I was sitting inside when I heard gunshots. I ran outside, saw the gentleman laying in the street,” said Weston Berg, the first armed Titan security guard to arrive at the scene. “I saw a suspect and ran toward the suspect trying to get information from him.”
He was aided by a colleague who saw the suspect and provided quick backup.
“I started driving down East Independence Avenue and I radioed in his location. I spotted him behind a gas station, and I immediately went in to back up my officer,” said Jesus DeJesus, another Titan Security officer who was just blocks away.
Titan Security says DeJesus was just one week into his new assignment — patrolling The Avenue — thanks to a new position by the Northeast Community Improvement District.
Both men say chasing an armed shooting suspect is just part of the job.
“I didn’t expect it so soon, but there are expectations here that we are going to see things like this,” said DeJesus.
“It feels pretty good. It’s just part of the job that we are hired to do,” said Berg.
Helping police and the community they spend time in almost every day is an added bonus.
“It makes me feel humble in a way. I feel bad for the victim, but I’m glad that we were able to at least assist and help KCMO police,” Berg said.
