KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s the end of an era at the Country Club Plaza. One of the longest standing clothing stores is closing. Jack Henry has been there for 83 years, but Tuesday the store announced it is officially locking its doors.
It was still busy day at Jack Henry`s, but a different of busy where there was organizing and slashing prices. The store is now getting ready for a big sale where everything must go.
The problem we encountered was Jack Henry was entrenched in a certain style that wasn’t meeting the needs of the business community today,” said Jack Henry President Spiro Arvanitakis
The doors are locked until June 5th. That`s when the sale starts. But some are skeptical of the store`s demise. Brian McCord, who has lived in Kansas City for 61 years, believes it`s all a marketing ploy.
“We’re going to close so everyone rushes down to try and get a deal,” he said.
He says it`s hard to imagine the Plaza without Jack Henry`s because it’s been there for so long. He remembers a time when mom and pop shops thrived.
“Now they’ve been gone for so long, you just kind of forget the names of them,” he said.
They were pushed out by bigger chain stores. Jack Henry is the latest casualty because it couldn`t compete with the changing times.
“The people trusted us for the special occasions. It’ll be hard not being a part of that same tradition,” Arvanitakis said.
