OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Police are looking for bold burglars who committed some fast smash and grabs to cars at several daycares in Overland Park.
Police say bright and early Wednesday morning the burglars broke into a total of five cars at three different Overland Park daycares. Police say the crooks smashed out the windows of two locked cars at La Petite Academy near 150th Street and Newton. The vehicles belonged to two moms who had gone inside the daycare to drop off their kids.
Police believe the same vandals committed the crimes between 7:30 and 9 o’clock Wednesday morning.
Investigators say once they shattered the victims’ car windows, the thieves grabbed the women’s purses, wallets and debit cards and then took off.
“You’ve got to take an extra step and lock up the items inside your trunk or take it in with you. And I know carrying one of two kids on your hip, and carrying a large purse or something makes it harder, but on in this case, it just shows how taking the extra effort is worth it,” said Officer Gary Mason with the Overland Park Police Department.
Police believe the same crooks also broke into two cars at the Kids-R-Kids Daycare on West 161st Street, and one vehicle at the Kindercare Daycare at 104th and Mastin.
Fortunately nobody was hurt in any of the crimes.
