HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — Harrisonville police are looking for suspects passing off counterfeit bills as though they’re real throughout the city. The funny money looks real enough that several businesses have been fooled.

It’s been happening all over town. FOX 4 talked to several workers at area businesses who say they’ve had multiple people trying to pass off these fake bills, and sometimes the bills are fooling the clerks.

Harrisonville police say they first heard of the situation on January 6th at the Casey’s General Store on 7 Highway. They say someone tried to pass of a fake $20 there and the next day, someone did the same at the Meiners convenience store and then again at QuikTrip.

FOX 4 spoke to some other business employees who say they also got fooled by bills as low as $5 and as high as $50. The $20s, they say, are pretty easy to spot.

“It’s smaller than the standard issued 20 dollar bill, it doesn’t have the security features that the government has put into place,” Lieutenant Chris Osterberg with the Harrisonville Police Department said.

Harrisonville police are urging cashiers to use a counterfeit detection pen to check all bills as they come in. When the person or people who made the bills are caught, they could face federal charges. If you know who might be behind the counterfeit cash, call the Harrisonville Police Department.
