KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Beer and baseball are a perfect combination, right? Not if you’re under 21. Kauffman Stadium and Kansas City Missouri Police are going after minors drinking at Royals games. Police have arrested dozens of minors caught drinking in the stadium parking lot this summer. The Royals say underage drinkers were hoping to blend with the thousands of tailgaters, but that their party’s been cut short in the name of safety.
After seeing a noticeably larger amount of kids tailgating and drinking, the Royals asked for help from police. Carrie Bligh, the Royals’ Director of Event Operations says on occasion some kids drank to excess and had to be treated in first aid.
“When that became the issue that’s when we said we need to do something and we contacted KCPD and asked them for their assistance,” said Bligh.
Police have gone undercover since the start of summer many dressed in Royals gear to approach young drinkers. In several stings, they arrested dozens of minors hoping to blend in with the crowds.
“It’s tailgating, it’s tailgate in Kansas City it wasn’t just the normal barbeques we saw out there it was large groups of what we believed were underage drinkers and we saw a lot of booze and drinking going on out there so like I said we thought we needed to do something,” said Bligh.
Bligh says they want everyone to be responsible saying, “If you’re underage this isn’t the place to drink.”
