SHAWNEE, Kan. — A 69-year-old Shawnee man remained in critical condition Wednesday after police found him severely beaten with multiple head wounds.
Police were called out to a home in the area of Nieman and 55th Street at about 1 a.m. on a disturbance call, where someone was reported to be armed.
The victim, identified as Dennis Davey, was able to talk to officers before he was taken to the hospital.
One of the neighbors knew something was wrong just after midnight when he heard his dog barking.
“He heard the ruckus and saw the guy crawling out the backdoor bloody; all over blood and asked him what happened and saw the girl running, so he chased her and caught the girl,” said neighbor Jeannie Shaffer. That girl was Davey’s stepdaughter, police said.
“The boy had blood all over him, he had his shirt off and he was trying to wipe it off,” said, Billy Kilgore, the neighbor who helped apprehend one of the female suspects after she ran from the home.
Kilgore said the suspects ran from Davey’s home, across his driveway and said, “he’s trying to kill us with a knife,” as they ran by him.
But Kilgore says he then immediately heard Davey struggling to stand up and come outside.
“And then I heard Dennis across the street, Billy, Billy, you know, asking for help and I ran over there and he was just beat, unrecognizable, He said, they tried to kill me,” Kilgore told FOX 4.
Police later caught two other suspects, reportedly the stepdaughter’s boyfriend and friend, with the help of a police dog.
The stepdaughter no longer lives at the home because Davey’s wife had moved out. Neighbors say the two were getting a divorce.
Neighbors say they were told the three suspects beat him up and then waited for him to die.
“He’s an awesome guy… He didn’t deserve that. He didn’t deserve to be beat like that,” Kilgore said.
“Apparently there were drugs all over the place,” Shaffer said. “I guess they were sitting there partying while he was sitting on the floor bleeding.”
Why would anyone want to hurt Davey? Neighbors say they heard the suspects did it for insurance money.
“[It’s] very sad that people would go to that extreme over money,” Shaffer said.
Wednesday evening, Davy was still in critical condition at Overland Park Regional Med Center.
Charges of attempted premeditated murder, aggravated assault and aggravated battery are expected to be filed against the suspects, who have not yet been identified.
