KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police believe a man in a wheelchair has been taking off with women’s purses while they shop at Kansas City stores.

The latest reported theft happened Friday at a Walmart in east Kansas City. The victim, an 86-year-old woman, was shopping when a man in a wheelchair swiped her purse. She later noticed it was missing and reported the theft to police. According to a police report, the woman was visible upset and crying when reporting the incident.

According to the report, the woman’s purse contained several items including $800 in cash; however when police recovered her purse and wallet, only $60 was taken from it. The thief had failed to find an additional $700 tucked away in a separate part of the wallet.

The thief was able to flee the scene and was seen leaving the area by bus. He was identified as a 55-year-old man, but has not yet been formally charged, so his name is not being released. The suspect remains at large but has a warrant out for his arrest.
