ORONO, Maine — Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher may not have had a criminal record in Missouri, but an incident at the University of Maine appears to back up claims by some that he could have a volatile temper. Belcher, 25, shot and killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, on Saturday and then committed suicide by shooting himself at the Chiefs practice facility.
FOX 4 News has obtained a police report from the University of Maine that shows Belcher nearly severed his thumb in April of 2006, when he punched out a window at a campus residence hall. The campus police officer wrote: “Belcher was upset over a girl and punched a window out.” That fit of rage caused about $200 in damages, according to the police report.
In addition to the severe cut to his thumb, Belcher suffered lacerations to his wrist. A former student claims the window was lined with wire mesh.
Police labeled the crime as criminal mischief, not a domestic dispute. But police did refer Belcher to campus judicial affairs on a disorderly conduct charge and Belcher was ordered to pay restitution for the broken window. Belcher recovered from the injury to his thumb and his agent, Joe Linta, disputed claims that Belcher could be a volatile personality.
“There was nothing in my relationship with him that would indicate any troubling past, anything that troubled him, that would have caused him to commit such a heinous act as this,” Linta said. “And we just — we’ll never know, unfortunately.”
Belcher attended the University of Maine from 2005 to 2008. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in child development and family relations. On one website, a person who claims to be a former student at the University of Maine and shared the same dorm with Belcher wrote: “Jovan was very soft-spoken and kind but also prone to violent outbursts.”
