INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Police were called to the scene of an armed robbery at an Independence business where a woman was shot.
Wednesday afternoon police were dispatched to Dingledine Insurance Group located at 16012 E. 23rd Street where an armed robbery had reportedly taken place.
Independence police said the suspect ran into the insurance agency, showed his gun and demanded money. That is when an female employee tried to run outside, and the suspect allegedly shot her. Police said the woman sustained apparent non-life threatening injuries. She was transported to an area hospital.
One witness said the woman ran to her door after being shot in the leg, and told her she did not know the suspect.
Police described the suspect as a six foot tall light skinned black male in his 40’s or 50’s, who was wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, khaki pants and a dark blue shirt with the words “ALLERGEN” imprinted on it, which is the name of a pharmaceutical company. They also said he had a speech impediment. He was last seen heading northbound on foot away from the scene on Trail Ridge Drive. Officers were still searching the area for the suspect as of Wednesday afternoon.
Police are asking anyone who has seen a person matching the suspect’s description to please dial 911.
