CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — A 61-year-old man faces a misdemeanor assault charge after police say he cut several inches of hair off of a woman’s head outside of a Virginia middle school. WTVR reports that Melvin D. Hunt was arrested on Sunday after the alleged incident that took place in the middle school parking lot last Friday.

The victim said she met Hunt and got into his car where he informed her that she no longer needed to come with him on a trip they had planned. She then said he asked for a hug, and when Hunt leaned in, he’s accused of firmly grasping her and then cutting her hair. He then drove away.

His neighbors knew something had gone awry on Sunday when several police cars showed up in front of his house and officers began searching his property. One said he could hardly believe what Hunt was accused of.

“I thought he was a nice guy every time I talked to him, my dad was totally shocked about the whole situation because he was a such a nice guy, we had no idea,” Browning Hyde told WTVR.

Following his arrest, Hunt was released on his own recognizance and showed up for work on Monday where he was reportedly put on administrative leave. Online court records indicate he’s due in court for his charge this Thursday, September 18.
