OLATHE, Kan. — Police are searching for a robber who stabbed a man in the stomach Thursday morning as he arrived at work. The stabbing happened outside a business near 116th and Strang Line Road.

Olathe police are canvassing businesses nearby and an apartment complex, looking for the suspect, who ran off. Police describe him as a black man wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt and dark jeans.

Police say an employee of E.B.E. Office Systems, a printer and copier seller, arrived at work around 7:30 a.m. As he got out of his car in the parking lot, police say he was confronted by a man with a knife, who demanded money. The worker handed over his wallet, and police say the robber stabbed him in the stomach with a small, kitchen-type paring knife.

“He did everything that was asked of him,” said Sergeant Bryan Hill of the Olathe Police Department. “Someone demanded money from him and in order to alleviate the confrontation he handed over his wallet and he still ended up getting wounded because of it, getting stabbed.”

The worker suffered a small stab wound to his stomach. Police say he’s going to be okay. Officers towed away the victim’s company car, hoping to recover evidence that will help them identify the robber.

“I don’t know if this person was walking through the area or might have been looking at this place in the past,” Sgt. Hill said. “That’s something we don’t know.”

Police are urging anyone with information about the robbery attempt to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
