KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police say Sunday was one of the worst they’ve ever seen on metro roadways. Three serious accidents resulted in one death and two critical injuries all within a few hours.
Crews were spread thin throughout the metro, as all of the calls started coming in.
“Day started with us going out to Emmanuel Clever and Paseo,” Sgt. Bill Mahoney said.
Mahoney says the driver somehow lost control of the car and crashed into Brush Creek. The victim was killed on impact.
“His vehicle appeared to of rolled over at least one time and he was trapped inside the vehicle,” said Sgt. Mahoney.
It took hours to get the car towed, as firefighters worked to extricate the victim’s body. As people in the community gathered with great concern, officers’ phones rang about another serious accident.
“It was a truck that crashed into a tree along the railroad,” Sgt. Mahoney said.
They headed out to 45th and Van Brunt, where they found a man in his 40’s.
“He is in extremely critical condition,” he said.
They cleared the scene and minutes later, their phones rang again.
“From there, we came to 23rd and I-435,” said Sgt. Mahoney
Police say a teenage girl was riding in the bed of a white truck when the driver hit a ramp guard rail. The teen was thrown several feet from the truck.
“She suffered pretty considerable head injuries and has not regained consciousness at the last update we got,” said Sgt. Mahoney.
Police say the driver tried to start his car to leave but drivers blocked him so he couldn’t get away. He is now in custody.
“This is one of the worst single days we’ve had in recent history,” Sgt. Mahoney said.
