KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If you leave your car running outside your home or a business, it increases your chance of becoming a victim. On Monday, Kansas City Police were watching for people who may be easy targets to get their cars stolen.
Instead of handing out fines for leaving their cars unattended, police passed on friendly reminders.
“I’m Sgt. Jones with the Police department, you left your vehicle running when you were inside,” said Sgt. Bryan Jones with KCPD. “We are having a lot of stolen cars around here.”
Luckily, officers were in the area when a car chase caught their attention. It turns out, the car had been stolen while someone was warming the car up in a nearby driveway. The victim says she is glad she got her car back so quickly.
“They found my car and it looks like they have enough evidence to actually catch this person,” said Angela who was a victim of car theft.
Officers say believe it or not, it’s a crime to leave your car running if you’re not inside.
“It’s illegal, to leave your car running,” said Sgt. JOnes. “You can get a ticket for it. We are going to give you that and not giving tickets out for it today, but just telling people about it.”
Angela says no matter how cold winter mornings are, she won’t leave her car running in the drive way anymore.
