KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The debate over seat belts on school buses has been reignited in light of Wednesday’s Pembroke Hill school bus crash. Fortunately there were no fatalities but 22 students and the bus driver were injured. The bus involved did not have seat belts.
The debate doesn’t focus on the desire to keep children safe as much as the price tag for the seat belts. Estimates range between $6,000 and $10,000 to equip large school buses with seat belts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the cost doesn’t make sense given that only six students a year on average die in school bus crashes.
We want to know how much you would pay if your child’s school district offered seat belt installation as long as parents footed the bill.
