WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says America is turning the page after years of war and recession.

Obama is using his State of the Union address Tuesday night to argue for his economic policies, including a tax increase on the wealthiest Americans to help those less fortunate. He is declaring that “Middle-class economics works.”

Obama’s comments came in excerpts prepared for delivery and released ahead of the address.

He also is calling for “a smarter kind of American leadership” that combines military power and strong diplomacy.

He is calling for a new war authorization to fight Islamic State militants. And he wants legislation to combat cyberattacks.
