KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Auto shop professionals say winter is a good time for preventative car maintenance, because the cold weather can be very hard on your vehicle.
When there’s a cold morning like Tuesday, the last thing you’d want is for your car to now start. That’s why maintenance is so important.
It’s not a good sign if you hear this “click, click, click” coming from your car.
“That’s when the battery has failed and it’s too low to even turn the starter over,” said Tom Athon of Vee Village Auto Services.
Athon is the lead Mechanic at Vee Village Auto Services. He’s been working on cars for 30 years.
Even before temperatures dipped, Athon noticed more customers coming in.
“This time of year would have a marginal battery to fail so we are replacing a lot of batteries,” he said.
But when it’s this cold, maintenance is prevention. Have the winter service check-ups for your car.
Besides the battery, it’s important to check up on the different fluids. The coolant needs anti-freeze and the windshield washers need windshield washer fluid.
Also make sure your tires have enough air in them to brave the winter.
A lot people are getting the memo. Athon says he’s seen double the amount of usual customers in the shop.
“Typically, it’s too late before we can do something about it,” he said
Taking that extra effort might save you the headache of being stranded in the snow.
