KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A woman says life has been torture since part of her roof flew off in February.
It happened after recent bad weather. Patricia White said what is worse, is the contractors never came back to fix it. But the contractors said it’s all a big misunderstanding.
White said part of her roof remains where it landed weeks ago.
“Every time it rained, I was scared that the living room was going to fall through,” White said.
White said she got her roof done about eight months ago by a small company called A.P. Landscaping & Concrete. She said she spent thousands of dollars on material and paid $600 in cash for labor, but never signed a contract. When her roof flew off, she called the company immediately. Lidia Mejia, with A.P. Landscaping & Concrete, called her back and left White a voicemail.
“Yes, we’re responsible. We’re going to redo your roofing,” Mejia said in the voicemail.
Only when White said she called Mejia back, the number was disconnected.
“I thought they were a reliable person because they had did work in the neighborhood ,and I thought that maybe it was OK, you know, at that time I didn’t know anybody so I did take them up,” White said.
We knocked on Mejia’s door to see what she had to say. Mejia said she stopped by and inspected the damage for herself, even describing it to us. Mejia said White wasn’t home.
“If we were trying to sweep it away, I would’ve never left her a message saying what we’re going to do or we’re going to come back,” Mejia said.
Mejia said the problem was, she was in and out of the hospital after that, and her phone got disconnected. She said when her brother, who helps with the company, never heard from White either, they didn’t pursue it.
“I think that’s the main point, miscommunication between us two, that’s probably what’s going on,” said Mejia.
Now Mejia wants to fix the roof, but all White wants, is her money back.
White is asking for $2,200 for materials and labor from the company. Mejia said they will only reimburse White for labor, which is about $500 since she said White owes them $100 for items they bought on their own.
