Taking care of a paraplegic adult is a struggle all its own. But a mom who’s been caring for her paralyzed adult son was coping with the task, until her washer and dryer stopped working.
The mom never asked FOX 4 Problem Solver Linda Wagar for help. She heard about her from Sister Berta at Kansas City’s Operation Breakthrough.
“This guy is totally paralyzed,” Sister Berta said. ” I don’t know how they are doing it. I really don’t.”
She’s talking about Erline Slaughter who’s been caring for her paralyzed 27-year-old son while struggling with her own health. The two were making a hard situation work until a few months ago when both her washer and her dryer stopped working. That would be a hardship for any mom, but particularly for one with an adult son in diapers.
Mrs. Slaughter has been using the bathtub to wash clothes and hanging them up to dry when she can’t get a ride to the laundromat.
“I don’t drive, so it’s hard going back and forth,” she said.
When FOX 4 Problem Solvers heard about Mrs Slaughter’s predicament, we called Factory Direct Appliance, a locally owned company with a big heart. Factory Direct didn’t hesitate to offer its assistance when we told them what we needed.
The store is donating a brand new Amana washer and dryer to the Slaughter family. The news brought Mrs. Slaughter to tears.
