KEARNEY, Mo. — One person was killed Friday morning in Kearney, Mo., when a propane truck slid into a tree.

It happened at about 9:15 a.m. near Petty Road and 19th Street. Aubrey Michael who drove by the accident said the scene was devastating.

“It was very, very sad,” she said. “It was very heartbreaking because the instant you saw it you knew that nobody could have lived through that just because of where the tree was. There was no cab left.”

Michael said the roads were icy and likely had not been treated by the time the accident occurred. She said she was involved in a minor accident herself just minutes before.

The victim has been identified only as a 29-year-old man who drove for Beckett Gas out of Cameron, Mo. The victim was wearing his seat belt, but the accident was so severe he did not survive.

Clay County sheriff’s deputies said there were 30 accidents between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. Friday.
