DENVER — One woman is safe after being taken hostage at a 7-Eleven in Denver on Monday.

The suspect was subsequently shot after attempts to negotiate with him failed. The suspect was struck in the torso and taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition. The hostage was not injured.

A news photographer at the scene recorded the incident on camera.

Police first responded to the 7-Eleven after receiving a call of a suspicious person inside the store. Police negotiated with the suspect for about an hour before he came out of the convenience store, using the woman as a human shield.

Police said when he attempted to re-enter the store, taking the female hostage with him, an officer fired a single shot, hitting the suspect in the torso.

The woman, who did not give her name, later spoke with reporters about the incident.

“It was terrifying. It was stressful and I don’t wish it on my enemy,” she said.  “Everybody that’s concerned about me, I appreciate your thoughts and prayers.”

The suspect has not yet been identified.
