KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Electronic gadgets are always some of the most popular gifts to give this time of year. But, our new gadgets mean it is time to retire our old ones.
FOX 4’s Mitch Weber discovered recycling is the new re-gifting. There are many businesses, like Surplus Exchange that takes in old electronics and separate the parts that can be used to rebuild computers. The other parts are then shipped to a facility in Iowa.
“I’ve seen console TVs, copiers, I’ve seen printers, computers monitors, computers, all of material sitting out, all that can be recycled and reclaimed,” says Bob Akers, co-owner of Surplus Exchange.
Susan Melling’s old chunky TV is going from her living room to be wrapped in plastic, put on a pallet and shipped to a center in Iowa along with other electronics where the recycling process will begin. Melling says, “That’s just part of being a good citizen and something that I instill in my children.”
