KANSAS CITY, Mo. — If you haven’t noticed already, you’re probably getting charged more by your bank for overdrafts, and if you use an ATM that’s not within your banking system, you may be getting it pretty hard.

According to a report from Bankrate Monitor, fees are on the rise across the country – although ATM fees for non-customers in the Kansas City metro are ranked slightly less, at $2.44, than the national average of $2.50. Kansas City is ranked ninth in the nation in ATM fees.

The report shows that Denver has the highest non-customer ATM surcharge at $2.80, while Minneapolis had the lowest at $2.20.

As far as bank overdraft fees, Kansas City ranks as the 16th highest in the nation at $31.68, which is just above the national average of $31.26.

Banks say that federal regulations have forced them to increase their fees, while federal officials work to keep interest rates at continued record lows in order to jump-start the economy.
