MISSION, Kan. — A 14-year-old boy is in police custody after a shooting that left a six-year-old girl injured Tuesday morning.
Police said late Tuesday the teen is related to the young girl.
Police said the girl was inside a chiropractor’s office in the 6000 block of Martway in Mission, Kan., around 11:05 a.m. when she was shot in the leg. The suspect — the 14-year-old boy — reportedly dropped the gun and ran from the scene.
Officers canvassing the area spotted the suspect walking between some buildings a short time later. When officers approached him, Capt. David Moloy said the suspect surrendered immediately.
“He matched the description of the suspect down to his clothing we were looking for,” Moloy said. “He was fitting every description we had.”
Moloy said the victim was transported to an area hospital. She was conscious and talking at the time. No other word on her condition has been released.
“It was chaotic,” Robin Hayes said, describing what she witnessed from the accountant’s office across the hall.
“The little girl was screaming. They were on the phone to the police. They were talking very fast and trying to figure out what was going on.”
Mission police said they will send the police reports to the district attorney’s office for them to consider possible charges.
