LEAWOOD, Kan. — A fire burned for more than two hours early Tuesday morning at a house in the 4100 block of W. 110th Terrace. Fire crews were called at about 2:15 a.m. when a passing driver saw flames and called 911.
“We received a 911 call from a motorist who saw the smoke and flames. Our first officer started this direction and from about eight blocks away could see smoke and flames showing. So we knew it was going to be a good fire to begin with,” Sergeant Brad Robbins with the Leawood Police Department said.
The homeowners told FOX 4’s Katie Ferrell they had been grilling out on their wooden deck with friends on Monday night. They believed they had extinguished the fire from a charcoal grill, but one of the homeowners said he awoke to flames and smoke in his kitchen. He had a fire extinguisher outside, but said there was no time and had to escape the house for his safety.
At present fire investigators don’t know if the home is a total loss or not. The couple who lived in the home had resided their for at least 30 years and credit their smoke alarms for waking them up in time to escape.
