KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jackson County issued 34 same-sex marriage licenses on Friday, Nov. 7. Twelve same-sex marriages were performed.
On Monday, 26 same-sex marriage licenses were issued. Fifteen same-sex marriages were performed.
The Jackson County Recorder of Deeds began issuing same-sex marriage licenses on Friday after a ruling from the federal court in Western Missouri.
Retired judge Vernon Scoville made himself available to perform marriage ceremonies, which were conducted in the legislative chambers of the Jackson County Courthouse in Kansas City.
“Once there is a stay order issued, by a Federal or State judge, and I know of it, it’s done, so I could imagine that some of these folks would say hey, this could be over tomorrow or the next day, let’s go get married,” said Judge Scoville.
Licenses were issued at both the Jackson County Courthouse downtown and the Truman Courthouse in Independence.
