KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Fans were buzzing with excitement Sunday afternoon after their beloved Kansas City Royals finally beat the Detroit Tigers in the last game of the series and at the last regular season home game.
Kauffman Stadium was packed with more than 37,000 screaming fans, all amped for the win and optimistic about their team making the playoffs.
“It’s great actually going to a game and actually having a chance to go somewhere after the season and having fall baseball matter,” said Royals fan Kyle Eichelberger.
Fans are hoping for another baseball season like 1985, which marks the last time the Royals made playoffs and of course, went on to win the World Series.
“Kansas City needed this for so long, so long!” said Mark Waterworth, a lifelong fan who got emotional thinking about playoff potential.
Whether the Royals clinch the division title or earn wild card, these fans aren’t picky.
“I got my playoff tickets so that’s all I’m rooting for now,” said Audi Scheumann. “Wildcard or division round, I’ll be here.”
They just want the chance for a playoff run and the opportunity to return to The K one more time this year.
“I’ll be watching every game,” Eichelberger said. “Hopefully we’ll make it.”
“They’re going to come back and they’re going to come back with a vengeance,” Waterworth said. “Kansas City has just been dying for this and our players are just dying to give it to us.”
The Royals flew to Cleveland after Sunday afternoon’s game. They will finish the season on the road against the Indians and then the Chicago White Sox; all big games that will determine if the Royals’ playoff drought will finally come to an end.
